Scratch2017: Recoding & Remixing ComputerArt

At the the Scratch2017-Conference in Bordeaux, I had the opportunity to present my work on Computer Art. After I had already sketched the idea for Recoding early computer art at the Scratch2015-Conference in Amsterdam), this time I was able to present concrete results. The experience with the participation in exhibitions and presentations had led me to develop a concept for the introduction into the programming on the basis of the Recoding & Remixing ComputerArt In book form (the book hopefully will be available at the end of the year).

In the posteression I could supplement the poster with some pictures and interactive projects, that should show that without greater difficulties interactive installations are possible now for really everybody. In my experience, not only playful applications can be created this way but also serious art objects of high quality, which can even be shown in exhibitions and multimedia festivals. In the long talk I have explained in detail, what I had described in the submission as follows:

„… Unfortunately many (if not most) of the introductions to program with Scratch et al. concentrate on the development of games. But for my addressees those games are not that motivating. Therefore I took my own area of interest – Computerart – as a starting point: There are several striking parallels between many works of the (early) Computerart and the well known examples of the turtle graphics of Logo.

In my presentation I demonstrate the interrelation between basic graphic elements of early Computerart and fundamental programming concepts (e.g. repetitive patterns & loops, coding of pictorial elements & lists). It can be shown that many of the „powerful ideas of computer science“ can be directly related to the methods needed in an „aesthetic laboratory“, not only to recode & remix early Computerart. Many graphical examples show the consequences of this approach. … At the end I show that with the inclusion of animation, the reaction to sensors, and the interaction with observers, also the door to contemporary media art can be opened.“

Ausstellung Kunst und Computer

ankuendigungsttwhoOktober 2016: Mit meiner neuen kleinen Ausstellung Kunst und Computer habe ich ein Heimspiel. Sie findet vom 18.10.2016 bis 25.11.2016 im Stadtteiltreff Waldhäuser-Ost in Tübingen statt. Sie geht über das Thema der Ausstellung Künstliche Kunst (2015) hinaus, weil sie exemplarisch zeigt, wie ästhetische Objekte mit den Merkmalen Farbe, Fläche und Interaktion erzeugt werden können.

Einleiten werde ich die Vernissage am 18.10 um 18:00 mit einem Kurzvortrag Kreatives Arbeiten mit dem Computer, mit dem ich einerseits – ausgehend von den Merkmalen der frühen Computerkunst – die Charakteristika der gezeigten Grafiken erläutern werde. Andererseits möchte ich mit einem Programmbeispiel andeuten, wie leicht alle Interessierten mit kostenlos zugänglichen Werkzeugen eigene Medienkunst erstellen können. Das Werkzeug meiner Wahl dafür ist natürlich nach wie vor Snap!.
